AHH enzymes have been identified in fish, but their genetic regulation has not yet been described. In this work, the rainbow trout aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase 1A (AHH1A) sequence was characterized. It is characterized by all the features commonly found in AHHs, with conserved amino acids among AHH1 family members. The transcriptional regulation of the ahh1a gene was analyzed by transient transfection assays in COS-7 cells. Treatment with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and 1-methylphenanthrene, both endobiotic agonists of aryl hydrocarbon receptors, increased the relative promoter activities of constructions with the ahh1a gene promoter fused to a luciferase reporter gene. The transcriptional control studies were carried out in primary cultures of trout hepatocytes that were also treated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.
