# Chapter 3: Working with Photoshop: Photo Enhancement
The following list gives an overview of the tasks you can perform when you’re working with a digital photo or an image file. This chapter explains the fundamental tasks in detail and is intended to help you get to grips with all Photoshop features from the menu bar to the final pixel.
Figure 3-1 shows a file with three layers. Notice that the bottom two layers are visible in the Layers palette (Window → Layers). However, the light cyan layer is the top most layer and is the only visible layer in the image.
FIGURE 3-1: You can see the layers of a Photoshop file by clicking on the Layers palette.
Photoshop has a natural layer-based editing system. This has two main advantages. First, it enables you to work on individual elements or areas of an image without risking a layer or image “crash” (see the sidebar “Crashing a file” for details on how to avoid these). Second, with layers, you can work on an image in stages, thus saving time and speeding up the process.
To create a new layer, choose Layer → New, shown in Figure 3-2. Doing so opens the New Layer dialog box, as shown in Figure 3-3.

FIGURE 3-3: The New Layer dialog box gives you several options for creating a new layer.
# CREATING LAYERS USING THE NEW LAYER DIALOG BOX
You can create a new layer using either the New Layer dialog box or the New Layer command. This is a somewhat confusing issue because the latter option (Ctrl+N) is not listed in the menu system, and the New Layer dialog box offers only four options. However, the New Layer dialog box offers more flexibility than the New Layer command. You can create a new layer directly from an image file, whereas the New Layer command is limited to selecting an existing layer. Moreover, as you can see in Figure 3-3, the New Layer dialog box offers the following options:
* **Layer background:** In Photoshop, most layers you create are used to hold information about the image. For example
Adobe Photoshop can be used on Windows, macOS and Linux computers. It is usually sold as a $119 standalone application but it also comes in a $59 annual subscription package. With the $99 Adobe Photoshop Elements it’s usually sold as a student, student teacher, public, or college tool.
The free Unofficial Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 For Mac and Windows 64-bit is a more updated free version of Photoshop Elements. It is developed by a community of enthusiasts and bug hunters in Linux, Windows, macOS and other environments. More features are added to the free version of Photoshop each month, and the library of plugins is growing as well.
The creators of Photoshop Elements and Unofficial Photoshop Elements found (they use) that the competition between Photoshop Elements and Photoshop was hurting the community, so they created their own version.
The Unofficial Photoshop Elements runs on any computer that runs Linux or Windows. It allows you to view the full library of Photoshop files, edit and create your own images, and most importantly, it is completely free to download, free to modify and free to distribute with no restrictions.
What is Photoshop Elements and Photoshop
To be honest, this article is a comparison between Photoshop Elements, Photoshop, and Unofficial Photoshop Elements.
But, I also need to introduce you to the general differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

You can do a lot of cool stuff with Photoshop, and I will be listing a few of those things in this article.
You can do things like add text, draw sketches, use filters to enhance your photos, and create smooth vector graphics. You can also combine many different elements to create an entire website. The list just keeps going.
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Adobe Photoshop Elements is a photo editor that offers a smaller set of features than Photoshop, but is much easier to use and allows you to do a lot of things with your photos.
There are some significant differences between Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.
